Suicide Squad Sucks! Movie Review

Based on the DC Comic, the government gives a team of supervillains a chance at redemption. The catch: their mission will probably kill them all.

Have you heard the word on the street yet? If not, you have probably been living under a rock. The disappointing news that Suicide Squad sucks has quickly travelled down the grape vine.

The Avenger‘s success drove expectations for Suicide Squad through the roof. Unfortunately, while The Avenger’s is a full put-together movie, Suicide Squad is not. It just didn’t work.

The first and biggest problem with the movie is the very random group of “super heroes” that made up the squad — everything from a truly super fire conjurer, to a non-super person good at climbing things, to a . . . crocodile. Many of the characters are truly uninspired and make you wonder how DC ever competed with Marvel at all. I’ve always thought Superman was a dumb and lazy super hero but the Suicide Squad takes it to a whole new level.

Will Smith as Deadshot and Margot Robbie as Harlequin were the diamonds in the rough, but even they could not carry the movie. Will Smith even commented negatively on his role in the film, claiming that even though he is a serious actor, it’s fun to do blockbuster movies. The implication was that the movie is simplistic and purely entertainment with no other value. I agree, except that the movie’s countless issues completely overshadowed any raw entertainment value.

To spare me some typing, here’s a summary of what made the movie terrible:

  • Uninspired characters, many of whom had lame super powers.
  • Dialogue that seemed very forced at times, combined with poor writing. Very obious when compared with movies like The Avengers that were clever and funny through-and-through.
  • An absolutely terrible villain. So over-the-top and stupid that audiences were left cringing and unable to believe their eyes.
  • A terrible premise. The baddest of the bad guys willing to fight for the good guys to get 10 years off their prison sentence? Seriously? Based on what got them in prison, they are all probably serving triple-life sentences. It just didn’t seem believable.

Suicide Squad is almost so bad that it’s good. Almost.
